Volunteer & Retail Coordinator

We’re looking for a Volunteer & Retail Coordinator to recruit, support and motivate volunteers across our retail shop, community outreach, drop-ins and fundraising events. You’ll play a key role in ensuring volunteers feel confident, valued, and well-supported while helping Punk Against Poverty maximise its impact across Torbay.

Job Title: Volunteer & Retail Coordinator 

​

Location:

This role is mainly based at our St Marychurch shop, with occasional off-site duties across Torbay.

​

Contract Type: 12 month contract

​

Hours: 16 per week

Typically 4 days a week, The role will involve weekends and occasional evenings. This working pattern may occasionally change depending on operational needs, events and volunteer activity.

​

Salary:

£14 per hour

​

Role Purpose

Punk Against Poverty is seeking an enthusiastic and organised Volunteer & Retail Coordinator to recruit, support and coordinate volunteers across our retail shop, community drop-ins, outreach activity, fundraising, and external events.

 

This role will also be responsible for meeting volunteer recruitment and retention targets, ensuring Punk Against Poverty has sufficient volunteer capacity to deliver shop operations, community activity and fundraising events.

This role is essential in ensuring our volunteers are safely recruited, well-trained, properly supported, and matched to roles that suit their strengths. You will help build an inclusive, motivated volunteer team and ensure volunteer activity is well-organised, effective, and aligned with Punk Against Poverty’s values.

​

This post requires a confident communicator who is kind, patient, assertive when needed, and passionate about empowering volunteers—including supporting people who may face barriers to employment.

Key Responsibilities: Volunteer Coordination & Support

  • Coordinate and support volunteers across retail, community activities, fundraising, and external events.

  • Act as a key point of contact for volunteers, offering guidance, encouragement, and practical support.

  • Ensure volunteers understand their roles, responsibilities, and expectations.

  • Provide ongoing training and supervision to help volunteers feel confident and valued.

  • Support volunteer-led sessions and activities, offering reassurance and troubleshooting when needed.

  • Maintain positive team morale and encourage a culture where everyone contributes fairly.

​

Volunteer Recruitment, Onboarding & Retention (Safer Recruitment)

  • Recruit and onboard new volunteers in line with safer recruitment procedures.

  • Match volunteer skills, experience, and availability to appropriate roles.

  • Ensure all required documentation, references, and checks are completed before volunteers begin.

  • Coordinate induction and training processes.

  • Retain a consistent volunteer base to ensure shop and fundraising activity can meet targets.

Volunteer Recruitment Targets & Capacity Building

  • Work to agreed volunteer recruitment and retention targets, ensuring the organisation maintains sufficient volunteer numbers across retail, community activity and fundraising.

  • Proactively promote volunteering opportunities through outreach, community networks, events and online platforms.

  • Develop and implement strategies to improve volunteer retention, engagement and attendance.

  • Monitor volunteer capacity levels and respond quickly to gaps in rotas or event staffing requirements.

Retail Volunteer Support & Shop Coordination

  • Support volunteer teams within the Punk Against Poverty retail shop.

  • Create and manage rotas to ensure shop opening hours are fully covered.

  • Maintain high customer service standards and ensure volunteers are confident engaging with customers.

  • Support effective teamwork and help volunteers carry out tasks fairly and efficiently.

  • Help maximise fundraising impact through effective organisation, volunteer leadership, and shop standards.

  • Support visual merchandising and presentation of stock, where appropriate.

  • Adapt shop approaches to suit a changing customer base (older customers, families, younger shoppers etc.).

Fundraising & External Events

  • Coordinate and support volunteers involved in community events and fundraising activity.

  • Assist with planning, set-up, delivery, and close-down of events.

  • Ensure volunteers understand event expectations and feel confident in their roles.

  • Ensure events run smoothly and reflect Punk Against Poverty’s brand and values.

​

Safeguarding, Equality & Good Practice

  • Ensure all volunteering activity is delivered in line with Punk Against Poverty’s safeguarding, equality, health & safety, and GDPR policies.

  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.

  • Escalate safeguarding or welfare concerns appropriately.

  • Assist with keeping volunteering policies up to date and relevant.

  • Promote inclusive volunteering opportunities and support volunteers with varying support needs.

​

Administration & Record Keeping

  • Maintain accurate records of volunteer details, attendance, involvement, and activity.

  • Coordinate volunteer scheduling, communication, and follow-ups.

  • Support monitoring and reporting of volunteer contribution and impact.

​

Representation & Engagement

  • Represent Punk Against Poverty at community events, volunteering forums, and partnership meetings when required.

  • Promote volunteer opportunities through local networks, social media and community connections.

  • Support the organisation’s public image and brand awareness through positive engagement.

​

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Experience working with volunteers

  • Retail experience (charity retail experience desirable).

  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • Confident communication skills with a friendly, supportive approach.

  • Ability to be assertive but nurturing and handle challenging volunteer situations professionally.

  • Understanding of safeguarding, confidentiality, GDPR, equality and health & safety.

  • Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Office / Google Docs / Google Sheets.

  • Ability to work flexibly across varying shift patterns, including weekends and occasional evenings.

  • A positive, upbeat and “can-do” attitude.

  • Reliable, trustworthy and able to work independently.

  • Able to work compassionately with people who may need additional support.

​

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Experience in volunteer recruitment and onboarding.

  • Experience coordinating, managing or supervising volunteers.

  • Experience in fundraising events or community outreach.

  • Visual merchandising experience.

  • Knowledge of fashion brands and reselling/retail trends.

  • Experience supporting people who face barriers to work

  • Confident using Canva for basic promotional materials.

  • Safeguarding Level 2 / 3

  • Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
